Vintage Celluloid Toys
The first celluloid toys were produced in Japan in the late 19th century. This substance became obsolete with the advent of plastics in the mid 20th century. Highly colorful, extremely charming, and featuring a variety of interesting themes, there is something magical about these toys. Inexpensive in their day, these delicate toys were damaged quite easily, and subsequently discarded. This is one of the main reasons why these toys are so desirable and very difficult to find, especially in mint condition. Toys made from celluloid are highly flammable and prone to denting and cracking.
