Cap guns were originally made of cast iron, but after World War II were made of zinc alloy, and most newer models are made of plastic.

How can I tell if your vintage Cap Gun is CAST IRON or DIECAST? Here is a very simple, yet effective way to tell the difference: Cast Iron is magnetic and Diecast is not. If a magnet sticks to your Cap Gun it’s cast iron. If the magnet does not stick, it is Diecast.
